How Massage Therapy Relieves Headaches and Migraines

Massage therapy relieves migrainesAccording to the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, over 40 million people in the United States suffer from migraine headaches on a frequent to fairly frequent basis. Migraine headaches can result in a person experiencing significant pain and nausea, sensitivity to light and other physiological responses.

Nearly all people suffer from "regular" headaches from time to time. Although not as potentially debilitating as a migraine can be, these headaches are also painful and unpleasant.

A number of different treatment regimens exist for addressing migraine and other types of headaches. Many people use over the counter and prescription medications to deal with more severe types of headaches. A growing number of individuals are turning to massage therapy as a means of finding relief from migraines and other types of headaches. Three different types of massage therapy have proven to be particularly helpful at aiding in addressing the symptoms of migraines and other types of headaches: craniosacral massage therapy, trigger point massage therapy and reflexology.

Craniosacral Massage Therapy

According to John Hopkins University Medical Center, craniosacral massage therapy is a gentle process. This type of massage therapy involves the head and lower back. The theory underpinning craniosacral massage therapy is that the head, brain and spinal cord of an individual is surrounded by fluid that flows throughout the system.

Through craniosacral massage therapy, the therapist is said to be able to identify and address blockages in the flow of the fluid (oftentimes caused by inflamed or tight muscles. The gentle pressure associated with this treatment regimen allows a normal flow to occur, which results in a reduction of migraines and other types of headaches.

Trigger Point Massage Therapy

Trigger point massage therapy is a firm to deep treatment that focuses on knots which are painful and thought to contribute to migraines and other types of headaches. The therapy process itself can be a bit painful, but it works to relieve and release these knots. One of the net effects of the elimination of these knots is a reduction in the incidence and severity of migraines and other types of headaches.

Reflexology

Reflexology identifies certain points on a person's hands, feet and ears that are said to correlate with other parts of the body. Through reflexology, a massage therapist works on these points to eliminate knots. In the end, by focusing on points connected to a person's cranial area (or head), reflexology is said to lessen the occurrence and severity of migraines and other types of headaches otherwise afflicting a person.
